CHANTILLY, Va. and LOS ALAMOS, NM, July 19, 2013 – Decision Sciences International Corporation (DSIC), an advanced technology provider of security and detection systems, and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a premiere science and technology research institution and U.S. federal laboratory, today announced they have been recognized by R&D Magazine as a 2013 R&D 100 award winner.

Called the “Oscars of Innovation,” the R&D 100 award recognizes the best and most unique high-technology products of the year. The top 100 represent the most technologically significant products of the year from the commercial industry, academia and government-sponsored research. DSIC and LANL were selected for their groundbreaking work in the development and commercialization of Muon Tomography.

“We are honored to be an R&D 100 award recipient,” said Decision Sciences President and CEO Dr. Stanton D. Sloane. “The award is a tribute to the DSIC and LANL teams who have dedicated themselves to bringing Muon Tomography to the marketplace and delivering an innovative, groundbreaking system that enhances security at ports of entry, borders and critical infrastructure access.”

Muon Tomography uses naturally occurring cosmic ray muons to safely and securely scan all types of vehicles and cargo containers to detect shielded and unshielded nuclear and radiological threats, as well as, explosives and other contraband. The product is based on research originally conducted at LANL and incorporates a substantial portfolio of enabling intellectual property.

“The innovation and creativity shown in this year’s awards is truly inspiring,” said LANL Director Charles McMillan. “It gives me great confidence in the Laboratory’s intellectual vitality and ongoing role in national security science. Congratulations to our researchers and their partners.”

The R&D award enters its 51st year and winners are selected by a panel of independent industry experts including industrial researchers and university faculty as well as the editors of R&D Magazine.
